Shaft Sleeve is a cylindrical hollow metal tube that is attached upon the shaft ensuring the right amount of protection during the packing. Pump shafts are often exposed to erosion and corrosion. The major function of the shaft sleeve is to protect the shaft from packing wear around the stuffing box.
Shaft sleeves are normally used in single-stage slurry pumps. In these centrifugal pumps, the sealing gland and the impeller are not directly attached to the shaft. The slurry pump shaft sleeve is attached in between the impeller’s bore. This design makes sure that the shaft sleeve bears all the wear effect while preventing the expensive slurry pump shaft from wearing. The major function of the slurry pump shaft sleeve is to protect the shaft from any kind of damage though they are several other functions too.
A shaft sleeve is prevented from rotating using a key, whereas normally it is the impeller’s key. Via the shaft sleeve of slurry pump, the impeller’s axial can be transferred to the external nut. If the slurry pump has a larger head, that means it has an axial load upon the shaft sleeve. This design is easy to assemble and maintain as compared to other designs. Besides, there is a large amount of space idle of a cartridge type mechanical seal as well as a large seal chamber.
