Shield tunneling, also known as tunnel boring, is a method of excavating tunnels using a shield or tunnel boring machine (TBM). During shield tunneling, the TBM excavates the soil or rock, creating a slurry mixture consisting of soil particles, water, and additives. This slurry is commonly referred to as "muck." helps stabilize the tunnel face, control groundwater, and transport excavated material back to the surface.
